Cravings for crunchy food is an indication that the body is holding onto excess moisture. This can be manifested in the form of water-retention, swollen ankles, dampness and mucus in the body or excessive production of saliva, phlegm and tears. Crunchy foods such as popcorn are drying, they tend to absorb liquids in the colon, meaning that they can help dry-out water in the body. In the case of a Kapha person, this could be good because they tend to be overly watery. However, a Vata person can become dehydrated and constipated because they are naturally more dry and tend to suffer from lack of moisture in the body. For that reason, popcorn is recommended in moderation for Kapha individuals, and not so much for Vata and Pitta individuals, which also tend to be on the dryer side.
Serves 3
Ingredients:
1/2 cup of organic corn kernels
2 tbsp ghee
1 tsp pink Himalayan salt
1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
Preparation Method:
– In a large pot, melt the ghee and add the corn kernels
– Cover the pot with a lid, give it a shake so that the ghee coats every kernel. Turn the heat up to medium
– Once the popcorn starts to pop, give the pot a shake. Repeat every 10 seconds or so to prevent the popcorn from burning and to make sure every kernel gets popped
– After the popcorn finishes popping and you no longer hear it, open the pot, add the turmeric, salt and black pepper, put the lid back on and shake until they become perfectly dusted with the spices
– Serve warm
Notes:
– Vata and Pitta individuals should not over indulge. Make it a rare treat and drink plenty of warm liquids with it
– Kapha individuals can enjoy it in moderation, as a part of a meal, or as a snack instead of a meal. So if you’re having a movie night, make popcorn your dinner.
