Hibiscus, or Japa flower is a considered a sacred plant in India (the meaning of the Sanskrit word Japa is actually ‘the meditative repetition of a mantra’). It is believed to have similar energetics to rose and lotus flowers, and can be very powerful if used together in devotional ceremonies.

Aside from the spiritual aspect of the red flower, hibiscus can contribute to our health in many ways. Its primary tastes are astringent and bitter, and it has a cooling effect on the body. In Ayurveda, hibiscus is consumed mainly in a tea form, and is used to treat problems associated with the kidneys, blood, and reproductive system. It is known to reduce heat and fever, it cools, purifies and thins the blood, lowers high blood pressure, promotes mensuration, calms the mind and is also used as a hair and skin beautifier, if used topically.

Serves 4

Ingredients:
5 cups hot water
3 tbsp dried hibiscus flowers
2 lemons, juiced
2 tbsp rosewater
5 tbsp raw honey

Preparation Method:
– In a teapot, add 1 cup of water along with the hibiscus flowers, and let the tea steep for at least 20 minutes or longer
– Let the hibiscus tea cool completely (you can prepare the tea ahead of time)
– Transfer the tea into a large pitcher, stir in the honey, rosewater and lemon juice, then add the rest of the water
– Enjoy it cool on a hot summer day

Notes:
– Drink cool, but not ice-cold. You don’t want to weaken your digestive fire
– Avoid consuming hibiscus if you have low blood pressure, pregnant or severely dehydrated
