Holy Abhyanga

Oil is very revered in Ayurvedic medicine. The Sanskrit word for oiling is Snehana; which translates into ‘giving love’. When we are doing anything with oil, whether internally or externally, we show a sign of love towards ourselves. Research on oil massage shows that it increases the production of Oxytocin; a naturally secreted chemical known as the ‘love hormone, which supports physical health, as well as feelings of love, kindness, and empathy. Oils can be used internally and externally.

Abhyanga is a synchronized massaging of the body in the direction of the heart, traditionally performed by two practitioners. It is often done using warm sesame oil, medicated with herbs. Abhyanga encourages lymphatic drainage, improves circulation, calms the nervous system, and eliminates toxins from the tissues.

The practice of Snehana, or oleation of the body, softens the tissues and encourages bodily cells, specifically fat cells, to release deep-seated toxins. It also helps build bodily fluids like plasma, lymphatic fluids, and healthy fat tissue. It acts as a protective barrier, inside and outside the body. You’ll know you’re in need of oil therapy when your skin seems dry and rough, you are feeling hypersensitive, physically or emotionally, when your body feels weak and your immune system is compromised, your mind is scattered and needs grounding, your sleep is lacking, or when your joints feel stiff, and you are experiencing inflexibility in your body and mind.

While receiving a professional Abhyanga massage can be a sensational experience, it’s not always available or affordable. Fortunately, you can do Abhyanga to yourself and still get its profound benefits. It is best if practiced daily but you can also benefit from doing it 3-5 times a week. It is usually done by applying and moving the oil from the feet up towards the heart to uplift the energy, or from the head down towards the feet for more grounding. On busy days, you can simply massage your feet with oil, cover them with socks and go to sleep.

Vata individuals should practice Abhyanga daily. Sesame oil or olive oil is most suitable for them.

Pitta individuals can do it daily using less oil. Coconut oil or sweet almond oil is most suitable for them.

Kapha individuals can practice it 2-3 times a week, alternated with dry brushing. Grapeseed oil or mustard oil is most suitable for them.
