Taste

Sweet & Astringent

Psyllium (Plantago ovata), or Isabghul in Hindi, is often used to treat either constipation or loose stools. It is considered sweet and astringent in taste and has a cooling effect on the body. The part usually used is the husk; it is very absorbent, which makes it an effective yet gentle bulking laxative, suitable for Vata and Pitta, but should be used sparingly by Kapha individuals.

Psyllium can absorb 14 times more water than its weight. It swells in the colon, collects bacteria and toxins, soothes inflamed mucous membranes, and moistens dryness. Due to it being a strong absorbent, it can cause clogging and dryness, therefore, a high amount of liquids or water should be consumed along with, and after taking Psyllium Husk. The cooling quality of it makes it a good remedy for acidity and heartburn. The best way to take psyllium husk is to take it at night, right before bedtime.
