The famous Golden Milk has gained popularity all over the world, and for a good reason. The Ayurvedic warm beverage doesn’t only taste great, but it also provides healing benefits if consumed regularly. Turmeric root, which is the star ingredient in Golden Milk and what gives it its vibrant yellow colour. Turmeric contains Curcumin; a flavonoid known for being a powerful anti-inflammatory, and a cancer fighting compound. It is best absorbed when taken with a pinch of black pepper and a source of fat. This drink combines all three components into one delicious beverage.
In addition to turmeric, the blend of spices used contain cardamom, saffron and nutmeg, all of which have a sedative effect on the body. Therefore, it is recommended to drink Golden Milk in the evening time for its soothing properties to help you fall asleep.
Serves 1
Ingredients:
1/4 cup coconut milk
3/4 cup water
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1/2 tsp cinnamon
A pinch of black pepper
A pinch of nutmeg
2-3 crushed cardamom seeds (optional)
2-3 strands of saffron (optional)
1 tsp raw honey (optional)
Preparation Method:
– Place all the ingredients except for the honey in a saucepan, and bring to a boil
– Let the mixture simmer for few minutes on a low flame while stirring occasionally
– Pour into a mug and stir in the honey
– Serve warm
Notes:
– Vata and Pitta people can add 1 tsp of ghee for extra lubrication
– Kapha people can use rice milk instead of coconut milk to make it lighter
